At the center of the enchanting rolling meadows, resided a young shepherd. His existence was essentially pure, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was to tend to his herd of sheep.

Their soft bleating and the rustling of the wind through the single tree on the hilltop were his only companions. Day after day, looking out for his responsibilities inculcated in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.

Yet, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for company. In one such instance from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome scheme.

Narratives of wolves prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a trick on the villagers.

One day he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills to help but saw no wolf.

The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This trick persisted for a few days more. However, one morning, a real wolf did charge at the flock. The shepherd boy ran for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no here one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.

The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is difficult to regain. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
